History

Built by James Fleming, the Aberlour Distillery is one of the younger distilleries in Scotland with many others dating back to the 18th century, and the early 19th century. It is situated at the confluence of two Scottish rivers, the Lour and the Spey; and named after the town Aberlour in the Moray county, home to another iconic distillery, the Strathisla Distillery, one of the oldest and continuously running distilleries in Scotland.

Aberlour was the fruit of James Fleming’s labor, and his ambition to build a distillery that was perfect in every manner and just the way he had desired to construct it. James had previously worked at the Dailuiane Distillery for 10 years, bringing a wealth of his knowledge to Aberlour.

He distilled whisky at the Aberlour Distillery until his death in 1895, whereupon the premises were bought by Robert Thorne & Sons, running the business until 1921 before selling it to W. H. Holt & Sons. The Aberlour Distillery eventually made its way to Pernod Ricard, the French alcoholic beverages giant with whom its ownership currently resides.
