Chivas Regal Extra

Chivas Regal Extra

Chivas Regal Extra is a no-age-statement blended Scotch whisky from the house of Chivas Regal, one of the most sought-after Scotch whisky brands worldwide.

It belongs to the ultra-premium category of Scotch whiskies, and is one of the newest introductions into the Chivas Regal inventory having been released in 2014. The Chivas Regal Extra is a unique marriage between the legendary Chivas Regal whisky and the Spanish traditions of aging the spirit in Oloroso Sherry barrels.

History of the Chivas Regal Extra

The journey of Chivas Regal began on the streets of Aberdeen, Scotland in the form of a grocery store under the ownership of the Chivas Brothers, James and John. Luxury goods were their specialty and whisky was one of the chief products supplied by the Chivas Brothers to their wealthy clientele.

Lucrative prospects in the whisky business and an ambitious foresight enabled the Chivas Brothers to venture into the whisky blending business, even earning the privilege of holding a Royal Warrant from Queen Victoria herself in 1843.

The first official and proprietary Chivas blend was developed in 1901, and was christened the Royal Strathythan, followed in 1909 by a whisky whose name would become the brand’s identity, the Chivas Regal.

Widely recognized as the world’s first luxury whisky, the Chivas Regal 25 redefined elegance, gaining a foothold in markets overseas especially the United States of America, where the brand found unprecedented success.

While Chivas Regal was a particular preference of the elite and the famous, it was perhaps Frank Sinatra who was among the greatest lovers of the Chivas Regal blends that the world has ever known.

The Chivas Regal Extra is created out of this pursuit of excellence that serves as the founding principles of a Chivas Regal blend, and the relentless strive for innovation.

Making Process of the Chivas Regal Extra

Like all Chivas Regal expressions, the Chivas Regal Extra is a blend of malt and grain whiskies. With a higher proportion of single malt whiskies matured in Spanish Oloroso Sherry barrels, the Extra is infused with rich flavors absorbed from these special barrels.

Chivas Regal whiskies are known to contain single malt whiskies from their Strathisla Distillery as a fingerprint, and owing to the characteristics of this Speyside Distillery, a distinctly fruity and flavorful profile is prominent on many Chivas blends.

This is also present in the Chivas Regal Extra, and its flavors are enhanced by the presence of the Oloroso Sherry finished whiskies that are used to blend this fresh new expression on the market.

Alcohol Percentage of the Chivas Regal Extra

The Chivas Regal Extra carries an alcohol strength of 40% ABV, the permissible limit for Scotch whiskies.
