J. P. Wiser’s 18 Year Old

J.P. Wiser’s 18 Year Old is a Canadian whisky from the J.P. Wiser, one of the country’s oldest and bestselling whisky brands. It is a blended whisky matured for 18 years in ex-Bourbon barrels for exceptional smoothness and mellow flavours.

History of J.P. Wiser’s Canadian Whisky

The J.P. Wiser whisky brand is eponymously named after their founder, John Phillip Wiser who established his business in 1857. Wiser was earlier merely working for his uncle and his business partner, running the Charles Payne distillery in Prescott, Ontario before buying out their stake.

Although Wiser was running the distillery since 1857, it was five years later that he became the sole owner of the distillery he had come to manage. Charles Egert, Wiser’s uncle and Amos Averell, his uncle’s business partner made way for Wiser to control every aspect of his product.

During those days, the quality of whisky available in the market was poor, and the spirit was more often sold in barrels. Wiser opted to mature his whisky considerably more than any of his local competitors, and thus significantly augmented the quality and

This led to a rise in popularity, and Wiser’s whisky grew in stature. He soon owned the third largest distillery in Canada, and enjoyed a lot of popularity, both locally and internationally.

After Wiser’s death in 1911, his trusted employee, Albert Whitney took over the distillery. Whitney had been working at the distillery for over 50 years, and due to Wiser’s son tragically passing away in 1895, there was no heir for his estate.

The J.P. Wiser brand has historically been very popular in Canada for their affordable pricing and great quality. The brand underwent a merger with one of Canada’s largest distillers, Hiram Walker, in 1935.

Currently, the J.P. Wiser’s brand is part of Pernod Ricard’s portfolio, one of the world’s largest conglomerates in the spirit and alcoholic beverage industry.
