History of J.P. Wiser’s Whisky

John Philip Wiser set out on a journey to create the eponymous whisky brand when he started working at the Charles Payne Distillery in 1857. The distillery was owned by his uncle, Cherles Egert, and his business partner, Amos Averell.

Within a few years, Wiser was able to buy out both Egert and Averell, and became the sole owner of what would go on to become one of Canada’s most successful whisky brands.

With an ambition to make whisky better than what was available in Canada in those days, Wiser began increasingly focusing on quality and taste. He began maturing his whisky for longer durations, ensuring no impurities in the spirit, and even began blending his spirit to achieve great taste.

This did not go unnoticed, and the quality of Wiser’s whisky was appreciated among the whisky lovers of Canada. As the years progressed, Wiser’s son Harlow joined the business, helping augment production substantially. Harlow passed away tragically at the age of 36, leaving Wiser with no heir to take over the family business.

When Wiser passed away in 1911, his trusted employee Albert Whitney took over the company. Turbulent times followed with Prohibition and the Second World War, leading to the company being merged with a few different Canadian and Scottish businesses.

In 1935, the J.P. Wiser’s brand became part of Hiram Walker’s portfolio, which is now part of Pernod Ricard, one of the largest liquor and alcoholic beverage producing conglomerates in the world.
