Seagram’s 7 Crown Blended American Whiskey

Seagram’s 7 Crown is a blended American whiskey, although it finds its origins in Canada. It is one of the oldest whiskey brands in North America and belongs to Diageo LLC, who split the Seagram’s portfolio of brands with other global beverage giants in 2000.

The Seagram’s 7 Crown was an immensely popular brand in the past, and suffered some decline in popularity although it continues to remain a formidable choice, with a sustained quality over the years.

History

The Seagram’s brand was established by Joseph Seagram in the city of Waterloo, Canada in 1883 when he became the sole owner of the Waterloo Distillery, built in 1857. He renamed the company after himself, Joseph E. Seagram & Sons which ran independently until a few years after Joseph’s death.

It was acquired by Samuel Bronfman led Distiller’s Corporation Limited in 1928, merging both corporations and retaining the Seagram’s name. During this time, Prohibition in America was ongoing and one of the largest markets of liquor remained closed.

Bronfman continued to produce liquor throughout Prohibition, being left with a vast reservoir of product when Prohibition was lifted in 1933. The American market was open, and with a vast supply, the Seagram’s brand tasted enormous success.

It became an institution, and after Samuel Bronfman, Edgar Bronfman Jr., his son took over the company business, diversifying the company’s interests whilst continually dominating the alcoholic beverage industry in North America.

The Seagram’s 7 Crown whiskey was their best performing product alongside VO (stands for Very Own), and Crown Royal Canadian whisky.

Although the Seagram’s Corporation was broken up and acquired by other multinational conglomerates, the brand’s legacy is preserved in the form its many popular and consumer favourite brands and products.

Making Process

It is a fairly economical product which indicates the higher presence of neutral spirits cannot be ruled out. The brand claims to have their product aged in Oak barrels without any elaborations regarding the source whiskies, or the maturation period.
